Restoring Coastal Ecosystems in East Lampung: FINCAPES Project Works with the Pasir Sakti Community

Mar 04, 2024

The FINCAPES project is piloting a nature-based solution initiative, enhancing mangrove ecosystems in East Lampung to holistically address environmental, social, and economic challenges. By restoring these ecosystems, the initiative adapts to and mitigates climate change impacts, promotes biodiversity, and bolsters community resilience, thereby enhancing the socio-economic development of coastal communities.

Mangrove forests are crucial defenses against environmental threats. Their dense roots entangle coastal mud and carbon, forming natural vaults that protect against erosion, storms, and floods, while also enhancing carbon sequestration. As one of the Earth’s most productive and biologically complex systems, mangroves offer significant ecological and socio-economic benefits, including disaster risk reduction and providing diverse habitats.

The selection of Purworejo Village within the Muara Sekampung Protected Forest was driven by its ideal environmental conditions and minimal human disturbances. This site, covering about 20 hectares, features fertile, stable soil and optimal salinity levels essential for mangrove growth. Its protected status ensures a secure environment for these ecosystems to thrive, allowing for detailed scientific study and robust community involvement.

The project’s primary goal is to restore the mangrove ecosystem to its natural state, ensuring the provision of essential ecosystem services. It emphasizes community engagement and empowerment, equipping local residents to sustain these benefits. Moreover, it aims to generate insights into effective mangrove restoration techniques that could be applied globally.

Anticipated outcomes include detailed ecological and socio-economic assessments to support mangrove regeneration, increased biodiversity, and strengthened ecosystem services through the restoration of 20 hectares of mangroves. The initiative also develops community-based management strategies and establishes a comprehensive monitoring framework to meticulously track progress, providing a model for similar conservation efforts worldwide.

By focusing on Purworejo Village, FINCAPES leverages East Lampung's unique environmental characteristics and community dynamics to create a resilient and sustainable coastal ecosystem. This project not only addresses critical environmental challenges but also supports the local economy, setting a benchmark for global conservation and community development efforts. Through strategic planning and community involvement, FINCAPES is poised to make a lasting impact on the landscape and lives of the people in East Lampung.
